Brian's Toy Box

If I'm being honest with you, I was a little worried that Rogue One wouldn't be great as a stand-alone film. But after checking out the first local showing last night, I'm happy to say that there's no reason to worry; the movie is fantastic!

There were tons of positives to the film and ONLY a small handful of negatives, as there will be with any film. Overall, this is a great flick and I highly reccomend it to any Star Wars fan as well as the average movie goer. Below I will be discussing some of my favorite parts of the movie and my few critiques. Fair warning - SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!!!

There were too many great moments in Rogue One to cover them all in this post so I'll just highlight a few parts that really stuck with me after the credits rolled.

The Good

This is definitely a war film - I had heard rumors that Rogue One might be more of a heist movie, but I thought it was way better that it was a true war film. The action was, simply put... phenomenal. When you have AT-ACT Walkers in a beach setting, it makes everything just epic.

Everyone dies - Don't get me wrong; it's not that I think it's right that people die. But in the context of a war film, I do think it's more realistic and I love that this movie has a darker tone. War is horrible, bad things happen, but there is always hope that good will prevail. Having so many of the main characters die just gives a certain authenticity and honor to the Rebel cause. We get a great taste of this early in the film when Cassian Andor kills his Rebel comrade to avoid giving away his position to the Stormtroopers patrolling Jedha.

K-2SO - This reprogrammed Imperial Droid was off the hook! He had the best lines, he played a pivotal role in the most dramatic scenes, and he was one of the more powerful characters. I was actually sadder to see this droid's life end than any of the other characters. Out of the entire Star Wars universe, this is now my favorite droid. Bravo!

The final scene with Darth Vader - I was in awe during the entire final scene with Vader. This was definitely the first time we've seen the legendary Vader actually show why he is the most feared Sith lord in the galaxy. He was a ruthless machine, slicing and dicing his way through Rebel Fleet Troopers to get to the Death Star plans. The troopers, realizing that they had no chance of resisting Vader, pass the plans through the door like a baton. We also get to see LEIA! The way this movie transitioned directly into A New Hope couldn't have been more exciting. You could watch Rogue One, skip the credits, and start up ANH without missing a beat.

The Bad (or the Could Be Better)

Although Rogue One ends up being great, it's definitely slower at the beginning and takes a while to the plot moving.

K-2SO was probably the only character I would call EXTREMELEY memorable. I'm not saying that I didn't like Chirrut Imwe or Baze Malbus, just that it's difficult to get too attached with the limited backstories of those characters. Along the same line, I was rattles that they didn't show more of Saw Gerrera (played by Forest Whitaker). He reminded me of the good Darth Vader, with his breathing apparatus and mechanical legs. Could have used more SAW!

I could keep going on and on about all the good parts of Rogue One and nitpick a few other bad things, and I do think I'll see it again within the next week to find things I might have missed, but twelve hours after seeing it I'm ready to put it in my top three list of Star Wars films. This may change in the future, but for now I'm still very impressed!

I'll be taking a break from writing the blog next week during my holiday vacation. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Brian's Toy Box

This week I'm bringing you the Brian's Toys exclusive Vintage-Style Jocasta Nu action figure. Back in 2012, we teamed up with Hasbro to create our first exclusive collectible, every Star War fan’s favorite librarian, Jocasta Nu. A limited number of these figures were created and they're almost completely sold out!

$59.99

This Jocasta Nu was designed and produced after fans expressed their desire for a brand new character action figure. The people spoke and Hasbro listened! While widely known for her a small role in Attack of the Clones, Jocasta Nu also made several appearances in the Clone Wars animated TV series.

Not only is this figure unique because it is the only Jocasta Nu toy on the market, but the accessories and packaging also make this piece a must have for collectors. The outer packaging was designed to resemble the holocron vaults which really brings Jocasta Nu's signature scene from Attack of the Clones to life. Another cool bonus to this figure is the variety of accessories. These include an unlit lightsaber hilt, a lit lightsaber, a battle bag with string closure, and, best of all, a bust of Count Dooku. This bust also has a built-in surprise, it conceals a holocron cube that's revealed when you take it off of it's column.

For an even better look into the details of this fantastic action figure, check out the Youtube video review we made when it was originally released.

Check in next week and I will discuss the new Rogue One movie and our 12 Days of Christmas sale and specials.

Brian's Toy Box

This week I'll be discussing a subject that has been on my mind for some time, collecting Star Wars POTF2, Episode I, POTJ and Saga toy lines. These particular lines were created by Kenner and Hasbro in the mid 1990s-early 2000’s.

These lines were mass produced by Kenner and Hasbro after noticing how big of a phenomenon Star Wars had become. Star Wars toys were the hottest things on the market and it had to do with the popularity of the movies. Toy collectors also noticed the large increase in value for the vintage items from the 70s-80s so many flocked to purchase the new toys which created a massive demand. Many of these collectors banked on the figures having the same rarity of the vintage items. Unfortunately it did not have the same effect due to over saturation of the market.

What I did not know when accepting a purchasing position with Brian’s Toys was just how many people had POTF2, Episode I, POTJ, and Saga toys still in the package. Daily I get several people calling and e-mailing to inquire selling their figures from the 90s/00s. Brian’s Toys prices items based on condition, market price, how quickly items are selling and how many we have in stock. I get many people that are surprised to hear that we're offering $1-3 a piece for many of the 4-inch figures from the 90s/00s.

Overall these items are still very cool, because come on- they are Star Wars! Just don't expect to make much more than the original cost of the figures back in the day though. I usually suggest passing the items down to a young kid or a loved one because making a kid happy could be more worthwhile than putting a few dollars in your pocket. All of this is the case unless you have the some of the most rare modern figures like POTF2 Ben Kenobi (Short Saber, Long Tray), POTF2 Weequay Freeze Frame.
